SCIA Engineer 18: streamlined usability, advanced material design and extended BIM links

SCIA Engineer 18 moves the software to the next level in terms of usability, material design and interoperability. We have enhanced usability with streamlined basic operations and more automatic workflows, improved integration into BIM workflows with upgraded Revit and Tekla links and added new design capabilities for advanced materials and construction systems.

More than ever before, we engaged our users in developing and testing SCIA Engineer 18; from getting user feedback at conferences, through customer service and surveys, to having users directly select their top three enhancements for version 18. What’s more, users participating in our SCIA Insider program reviewed and tested some the new functionalities, providing valuable feedback and shaping this new release together with our development team.

SCIA CELEBRATES JUBILEE AND LAUNCHES ITS 10TH USER CONTEST

SCIA rejoices over the pre-announcement of its 10th global competition and will soon invite all SCIA Engineer users worldwide to participate in the 2017 contest entitled the ‘The Art of Structural Design’.

Projects can be sent in from 1 December 2016, up to 28 February 2017.

                                                   Digital Building Transition Awards (PTNB)

Established by the Government of France, the Digital Transition Plan for Buildings (PTNB) awards recognize software innovations that help building design and construction professionals transition to and work within a Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow.

Category 5 - “Structural and Civil Engineering”

Structural engineering consultancies and engineering firms are the beneficiaries of the software solutions of this category. The jury wished to reward the solution which, in the fields of calculation and drawing, offers the greatest possibilities of integration in a BIM collaborative process, taking into account all the technical aspects related to the structural design.

93 software publishers entered this contest. A jury composed of 12 people analyzed the files presented in order to retain 11 winners (with 2 winners ex aequo in a category).

Winner: SCIA Engineer, SCIA France SARL

A word from the jury: «Already present on the market for some time, this product has evolved according to the needs of the professionals and the integration of BIM ».

Code-design of beams and columns

The solution for design of reinforced concrete beams, columns and ribs has been further extended by reinforcement templates and it now covers the complete workflow:

Definition

• Definition of basic amount of reinforcement.
• Definition of settings for the calculation of the additional reinforcement
• Selection of templates from a library.

Calculation

• Calculation of required area of reinforcement or required number of bars of a given diameter
• Calculation of shear reinforcement as required area or as required number of legs

Review and check

• Comparison of the required area of reinforcement with the limit values stipulated in the code.

Steel connections enhancements

• Base plate connections design in full compliance with EN 1993-1-8 including calculation of moment resistance, determination of rotational stiffness, classification of the connection.
• The length of anchor bolts is now determined according to EN 1992-1-1 and the strengthening effect of the concrete block around the zone in contact with the base plate is taken into account.
• Beam-to-column connection with 4 bolts now calculates the tension resistance of groups of bolt rows.
• The built-in libraries have been extended by bolts, screws, nuts and washes according to the latest ISO/EN codes.
• Better arranged and clearer report.
